A gritty, white-knuckle, action ride set in the near-future where the sport of boxing has gone high-tech, Real Steel stars Hugh Jackman as Charlie Kenton, a washed-up fighter who lost his chance at a title when 2000-pound, 8-foot-tall steel robots took over the ring. Now nothing but a small-time promoter, Charlie earns just enough money piecing together low-end bots from scrap metal to get from one underground boxing venue to the next. When Charlie hits rock bottom, he reluctantly teams up with his estranged son Max (Dakota Goyo) to build and train a championship contender. The Book of Five Rings: The Real Art of Japanese Management

List Price: $5.99

Translated by V. Harris. Japan's answer to the Harvard MBA...Written over three centuries ago by a Samurai warrior, the book has been hailed as a limitless source of psychological insight for businessmen-or anyone who relies on strategy and tactics for outwitting the competition. Read more...

To learn a Japanese martial art is to learn Zen, and although you can't do so simply by reading a book, it sure does help--especially if that book is The Book of Five Rings. One of Japan's great samurai sword masters penned in decisive, unfaltering terms this certain path to victory, and like Sun Tzu's The Art of War it is applicable not only on the battlefield but also in all forms of competition. Always observant, creating confusion, striking at vulnerabilities--these are some of the basic principles. Going deeper, we find suki, the interval of vulnerability, of indecisiveness, of rest, the briefest but most vital moment to strike. In succinct detail, Miyamoto records ideal postures, blows, and psychological tactics to put the enemy off guard and open the way for attack. Most important of all is Miyamoto's concept of rhythm, how all things are in harmony, and that by working with the rhythm of a situation we can turn it to our advantage with little effort. But like Zen, this requires one task above all else, putting the book down and going out to practice. --Brian Bruya Read more...

On Gay Rights, Moving Real-Life Friends to Action

07.07.11

Let’s say you have 70,000 people on Facebook.  You still have to do something with them.  What? In revolutions that succeed, like the one in Cairo’s Tahrir Square, organizers have a carefully-planned answer to that question. The second problem is that online connections alone, like “friends” on Facebook, are not strong enough to motivate people in tough or dangerous situations. As Macolm Gladwell noted last year in a piece in The New Yorker, high-risk activism is a “strong-ties” phenomenon.  The people who stayed with the American civil rights movement, he explained, were not more committed than those who dropped out, but they had more personal connections to others in the movement.   The Egyptians in Tahrir Square were motivated by their connections to others in the group around them.  They wanted to go out in the street and be daring and take risks with their friends.  Real friends can flip a switch that turns ordinary people into heroes.  Online “friends” cannot.

Awesome Robo!: 'The Broship Of The Rings' Should Probably Be A ...

by Chris Riley

I really hope the trend of going full bro-mode on beloved trilogies catches on, because these pieces by artist Noelle Stevenson are just too damn good. I can only imagine the insanity of a game of beer pong between Gimli and Legolas, and the constant nagging of Gollum as everyone tries to figure out who the hell invited him. And the ring? I imagine that to be a metaphor for the sacred "poon".
