Art show keeping the focus on culture

More than 50 Indian artists will show and sell jewelry, paintings, rugs and other pieces at the festival, which is aiming to change its focus to a more cultural-based theme, said Beverly Stepp of the Pinetop-Lakeside Chamber of Commerce.

Each year, the chamber selects a painting to promote the festival. This year's selection is a painting by Randy Keedah titled "Homeland Security."

The name evokes images of the T-shirts sold in many Southwest gift shops, with an old photo of Apaches, guns held across their chests. Keedah's painting uses the words "Homeland Security," and the subject is Apaches, but the work depicts three Apaches on a rock formation, scanning the distance for enemies. Keedah's work frequently uses rich desert colors that make the landscape seem more alive, Stepp said.
